AT&T Wireless - Femto Cell Trials Continue

AT&T is looking at jumping into the femto cell party, joining Sprint (first) and Verizon (second) with a router looking box that promises to improve coverage where you decide to plug it in.

Whereas the Sprint and Verizon units, sourced from Samsung, enhance voice coverage across the 1xRT CDMA network and do not provide 3G EvDO data, the AT&T unit provided by Cisco is the polar opposite: it will promises improvements in 3G UMTS/HSPA coverage but does nothing for 2G GPRS/EDGE/GSM users.

Where does that leave us? Well, if you're an iPhone 3G or 3Gs user, or have another device that works on AT&T's US 3G bands, then you can purchase this device to give you better coverage where you need it as long as you have fast reliable internet service.
